Young Australian Charged for Supposedly Attaching Sticker Eyes on ‘Cast in Blue’ Artwork
A young person from the Land Down Under has faced legal proceedings after allegedly vandalizing a sizable art piece of a legendary being by affixing googly eyes to it.
The 19-year-old, aged 19, appeared remotely at the local court in South Australia on Tuesday, facing with one count of damaging property.
Officials commented at the moment of the recent event, the municipal authorities explained that CCTV footage showed a individual placing artificial eyes on the artwork, which locals have dubbed the “Blue Blob”.
Ms Vanderhorst did not enter a plea and told the court she was unwell, according to news outlets, with the magistrate advising her to find a legal representative before her upcoming hearing in December.
A day after the alleged incident, the local mayor said that restoration to the popular community sculpture would be costly as the adhesive eyes could not be detached without harming the art piece.
“This wilful damage to a valued public artwork is inappropriate and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin remarked in September. “It is not harmless fun, it is costly - it is also frustrating to those members of our society who have welcomed the Blue Blob.”
She added the council would pursue the “significant” restoration expenses from those responsible for the vandalism.
At the time the sculpture was initially suggested, it drew varied responses from the local community due to its cost and design.
Priced at A$136,000 ($89,000; £68,000), the artwork depicts a legendary giant animal, with the creators influenced by an ancient marsupial ant-eater discovered in nearby caverns that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”.
