What We Know Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
