The network's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
