Taliban Used Discarded British Gear to Locate Local Nationals That Served With Allied Troops, Inquiry Learns

An informant has disclosed an official investigation that the UK abandoned sensitive equipment allowing Afghanistan's rulers to track down local individuals that had served with western forces.

Data Breach Puts Numerous at Risk

The whistleblower, identified as Person A, testified that Afghans affected by the data leak were instructed to change residences and switch their phone numbers to protect themselves from the ruling authorities.

MPs are investigating official management of a serious leak of confidential data affecting almost nineteen thousand individuals who had asked to come to the UK to flee militant rule.

How the Leak Occurred

A spreadsheet including private information, comprising names, contact details and in some cases family information, was accidentally leaked by a staff member stationed at British military command in last year.

The incident came to light only in August 2023, when the names of multiple applicants who had requested to relocate to the UK were posted on Facebook.

Regime's Resources

It appears there is this misconception that Afghan rulers lack comparable resources that allied forces use,” the whistleblower testified to MPs.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. If they have a contact number, they can locate your precise location. This is exactly how the unit achieved.”

When questioned about whether the Taliban possessed sophisticated technology, the whistleblower stated: “They've got everything.”

Aftermath of the Information Leak

Early investigations submitted to the inquiry indicated that approximately fifty kin and associates of individuals impacted by the breach had been murdered.

A superinjunction regarding the leak was put in force in late 2023 and blocked any information concerning it from public disclosure until recently.

Protective Actions

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization associated with informed individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “apprehensions that mobile communications had been compromised”.

“We advised that they change residence where feasible and switched their contact details. Those were the two main details that, should militant forces obtained such data, would lead to their location being found,” the source testified.

Challenged Assessments

Person A disputed that an official review performed by a former official had been incorrect to state that the acquisition of the information by the Taliban was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.

“The important fact is that these individuals are in hiding from the Taliban; they remain concealed. All concerns relate to past work history.”

She detailed disturbing abuse experienced by at-risk Afghans, including electrocution, waterboarding, and violent assaults.

“There are cases of four-year-old children who have had limbs fractured to try to get the family to say where someone is,” she testified.
