Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters
A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using these medications should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
