Oscar-Nominated Star Diane Ladd, Famed For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Has Died at 89 Years Old.

This Oscar-nominated performer Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran left us aged 89.

This actress, with filmography included Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, passed away at home in California’s Ojai. This announcement was revealed in a statement shared by her offspring, Academy Award-winning star Laura Dern, her daughter.

Laura Dern, who performed alongside Diane Ladd in several movies including Rambling Rose, referred to her as “my incredible hero plus my profound gift being my mom”, writing that she was by her side when she passed.

“She was the greatest mother, daughter, grandmother, performer, creative along with compassionate soul that seemed almost dreamlike,” she wrote. “We were fortunate to know her. She is now with the angels.”

Early Career and Rise to Fame

Her initial acting years included small roles in TV shows like Gunsmoke whereas the 1970s featured her performing alongside the legendary Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown.

In the same year, 1974, she performed alongside Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese praised comedy drama the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her acting landed Ladd an Academy Award nomination as best supporting actress.

Later Decades

In the 1980s, she appeared in the dramatic film Black Widow as well as humorous film Christmas Vacation while also joining the sitcom Alice, a comedy program based on her earlier movie.

In the following decade, she earned a further best supporting actress nomination for her part in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart where she acted as the mother of her actual daughter the character played by Dern. A year later she received a further nomination for her role in Rambling Rose which included Dern.

“This was the film that Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she invited Laura and I to London for a premiere and an event dedicated to us,” Ladd recalled regarding Rambling Rose. “And she sat between us, holding both our hands, and crying, watching us perform.”

That decade included parts in the comedy The Cemetery Club reuniting her with Ellen Burstyn, Primary Colors, a satirical film, with John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne Citizen Ruth where she played Laura Dern’s mom again. That period also brought her nominations for Emmy Awards for work on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire plus Touched by an Angel.

Collaborations with Daughter

She persisted in performing with Laura Dern in dramatic comedies Daddy and Them, a movie, the David Lynch project Inland Empire and White’s dark comedy series Enlightened. She additionally starred alongside actress Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins in that movie and with Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.

Subsequent TV appearances consisted of Ray Donovan, a drama and Young Sheldon, a comedy.

Behind the Camera
