Crew Member Reveals Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the mission, such as increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the edge of outer space.
The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from various fields.
The company behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company established by a well-known tech mogul.
