China Sentences Infamous Myanmar Fraud Mafia Figures to Execution
A China's judicial body has sentenced several top individuals of a well-known Myanmar organized crime group to capital punishment as Chinese authorities continues its crackdown on scam activities in the region.
Overall, twenty-one clan figures and partners were sentenced of fraud, murder, assault and various crimes, stated a state media document posted on the judicial portal.
This clan is among a few of organized crime groups that rose to power in the 2000s and converted the poor remote area of Laukkaing into a profitable hub of gambling establishments and nightlife areas.
In recent years they turned to scams in which thousands of smuggled individuals, a large number of them Chinese, are caught, harmed and obligated to defraud others in unlawful enterprises valued at huge sums.
Details of the Judgment
Syndicate boss Bai Suocheng and his son Bai Yingcang were among the several individuals sentenced to execution by the judicial body. Another individual, Hu Xiaojiang and A fourth person were the additional convicted.
A couple of members of the clan mafia were handed suspended death sentences. Several were given to life in prison, while nine others were given jail terms ranging from a period of 3-20 years.
The clan, who controlled their own militia, established 41 compounds to host their online fraud schemes and gambling houses, officials reported.
Scale of Criminal Schemes
Such illegal enterprises included more than 29bn local currency ($4.1 billion; £3.1bn). They also led to the demise of several Chinese individuals, the suicide of an individual and several harm, official sources reported.
The severe penalties handed down by the judicial body are within the Chinese initiative to remove the vast scam rings in South East Asia - and deliver a strong signal to other illegal groups.
Background of the Families
Such clans rose to power in the early 2000s with the help of a prominent figure - who now leads the country's military government. He had aimed to support allies in the town after removing its former leader.
Among the clans, the this family were "the top", Bai Yingcang earlier informed state media.
"At that time, our Bai family was the leading in both the government and military spheres," he said in a report about the Bai family, shown on Chinese state media in July.
During the documentary, a worker at their illegal operations narrated the harm he had endured at the location: besides being beaten, he had his fingernails extracted with tools and a couple of his digits cut off with a tool.
Additional Allegations
The son is among those who were given to death in the latest ruling. He has also been independently sentenced of planning to traffic and manufacture a large quantity of illegal drugs, reports reported.
Decline of the Families
The families' fall happened in last year as situations changed.
Previously Chinese authorities has urged the regime to rein in scam schemes in Laukkaing.
Recently, the law enforcement announced arrest warrants for the leading individuals of these families.
The patriarch, the Bai family's head, was among the figures who were handed to Beijing from the country in the beginning of the year.
"Why is the state putting so much effort to target the groups?" a official stated in the July film.
The purpose is to caution other people, regardless of who you are, where you are, as long as you engage in these terrible crimes against the Chinese people, you will pay the price."
